Using design and AI to give water a voice

My role

Natural Networks was a project using poetry and artificial intelligence to connect humans to natural environments. It was exhibited as part of London Design Festival.

Giving a voice to water

The system consists of a series of floating buoys collecting environmental data from different locations across the UK canal network. Data is sent via the internet to a remote computer.

The data is then processed by a machine learning algorithm, trained to generate poems from a large set of twentieth century poetry.

By giving water a voice, the project explores the notion of non-human intelligence and highlights the importance of listening to our surroundings.

“One of the most thought provoking projects of London Design Festival”
